Margaret Sanger was born on this day in 1879 in Corning, NY.|
As a maternity nurse, she witnessed a young woman die from a back-street abortion - an experience that ignited her lifetime commitment to fighting for women's rights and freedoms. In 1914, Margaret launched her campaign for public education with a newspaper, the Woman Rebel, for which she was charged with violating federal law and faced a sentence of up to 45 years in prison upon conviction. And so the battle began. For the next 30 years Margaret tirelessly campaigned for her cause, from smuggling diaphragms from Europe into he US to raising funds for the development of the first birth control pill. She went on to found what we know today as Planned Parenthood.
